KAKADU'S SIX SEASONS
Forget about the tropical "wet and dry" seasons, or summer and winter! In Kakadu's Gundjeihmi language there names for the six distinct seasons that Aboriginal (Bininj) people recognise by observing nature and the land they live off. Also, the products that available at our 'bush supermarket' change with the seasons. The length and severity of seasons and month they occur often vary from year to year.
| Gudjewg | (January,
February) - Heavy monsoon rain and flooding, Bush blackcurrants are
ripe. It's the middle of the 'wet', cyclone season! |
| Banggereng | (March) - Dark skies clear, Kakadu Plums are ripe, eat goose egg, a few last "knock'em down storms". |
| Yegge | (April, May) - Cool south east winds, Bininj start fires to clear country, good time for fishing. |
| Wurrgeng | (June, July) - Cold time (18-30C), more burning, magpie geese getting fat, hunt long neck turtle. |
| Gurrung | (August, September) - Getting hotter and humid, hunting geese, file snake, turtle, sugarbag (wild honey). |
| Gunumeleng | (October, November, December) - Aljurr (Leichhardt's Grasshopper) come out for first rain, thunderstorms, big mob lightning! Time to pick yummy green plums. |
